"התיאטרון לא צריך להיות בונבון ממולא ליקר. התיאטרון צריך להשפיל, להעליב, להתקיף את הצופה ..." נלסון רודריגס 1980-1912, גדול היוצרים הברזילאים ומייסד התיאטרון המודרניסטי של ברזיל. בחייו הגדושים במחלוקות כתב על גדולות וזוטות החיים באופן מסעיר וחתרני. שנים רבות הוכפש כ"מלאך רשע", דמות חריגה בעלת דמיון פרוורטי שיש להוקיעה מהחברה הברזילאית. רודריגס נרדף על ידי הימין, השמאל, הצנזורה, הקתולים, המבקרים ולעיתים קרובות גם על ידי הקהל, אך אי אפשר היה להתעלם מייחודו ומגאונותו. הנשיקה על האספלט - נשיקה תמימה, מחווה טהורה של חסד ושל אנושיות, מחוללת שרשרת של קונפליקטים והופכת לציד מכשפות. הנשיקה על האספלט מחדדת בווירטואוזיות את ערכן של העמדה העצמאית ושל המחשבה החופשית בתוך העדר ובועטת ב"תמימות הדעים האווילית". במחזה חושף רודריגס, בלי שמץ של סנטימנטליות, את צביעות התקשורת, את מראית העין והמוסרנות של החברה הבורגנית וגם את עומק בדידותו של האדם" -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
