"מינה ברנייס היא אישה צעירה, שנונה ומשכילה מדי שחיה בווינה הראוותנית והתוססת של סוף המאה ה-19. היא מסרבת להינשא ולנהל חיי משפחה משעממים כמצופה ממנה ולאחר פיטוריה הפתאומיים, מוצאת את עצמה ברחוב, מובטלת וחסרת כל. בייאושה, היא פונה לעזרת אחותה, מרתה, אשתו של ד”ר זיגמונד פרויד, הרופא המבריק, השתלטן והממגנט, אבי הפסיכואנליזה ומגדולי החוקרים של נפש האדם. בניגוד למרתה העצורה והדיכאונית, שנרתעת בשאט נפש וזעזוע ממחקריו “הפורנוגרפיים” של בעלה, מינה הופכת לאשת שיחו וסודו של פרויד. תחת השפעת קוקאין ואלכוהול, היא נחשפת לתיאוריות המרתקות שלו, לתיאורי המקרים של מטופליו, לדיונים פילוסופיים וספרותיים ולווידוייו אודות הקשיים בנישואיו עם אחותה. הם מפתחים יחד את מה שנראה תחילה כמו ידידות אינטלקטואלית, מפגש בין שתי נשמות, אך משהו עמוק יותר מפעפע מתחת לפני השטח, קטסטרופה בלתי נמנעת שתטלטל את חייה ..." -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
