"מגילת אסתר כפי שהיא מופיעה כיום בנוסח המסורה בתנ"ך, היא יותר מאשר מגילה צבעונית המספרת על העם היהודי בשושן תחת מלכות אחשוורוש. טמון בחובה הסיפור האמתי של היהודים והמטרה שלשמה נכתבה. יהונתן בן שמעיה משבט בנימין, מחבר המגילה, רוצה להעלות על נס את סיפורו של שאול המלך, מלכה הראשון של ממלכת ישראל המאוחדת, וחובר למרדכי בן יאיר אשר היה מזרעו של המלך שאול. יהונתן שוזר בדרך חמקמקה ואלגנטית את קורות היהודים בפרס העתיקה וישועתם. הוא מכוון את הקורא במגילתו למסקנה כי הישועה לעם לא הגיעה מזרע דוד המלך כמובטח, כי אם מזרע שאול, ושצאצאיו מקיימים את הצו האלוהי שעליו עבר והוא השמדת העמלקים כולם. יהונתן חווה אהבה שונה - אהבת גבר. הוא נאלץ להתמודד גם עם החברה הפטריארכלית והנוקשה של פרס העתיקה – חברה שמתקשה לקבל את האחר – וגם עם בני משפחתו ודתו, ובכל זאת רוקם מגילה צבעונית ויפה" -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
