שלטונות האימפריה הרומית הפעילו מדיניות קולוניזציה והפקעת קרקעות מידי יהודים, לשם העברתם לידי הנוכרים שהיגרו לארץ בעידוד השלטונות. ההתנגדות של היהודים למדיניות הרומית דוכאה באכזריות במרד הגדול (70-66) ובמרד בר כוכבא (135-132). מאוכלוסיה בת כשתיים וחצי מיליון יהודים במאה הראשונה לספירה, נותרו בשלהי תקופת הכיבוש הרומי כשמונה מאות אלף בלבד. הרג לוחמים, מכירת שבויים לעבדות בשווקי האימפריה ובריחת יהודים מאימי השלטון הזר גרמו לחסול הרוב היהודי בארץ ישראל. בתגובה להתנגדות היהודית למדיניות הרומית הוחלט לפגוע בקודשי הדת היהודית (הריסת בית המקדש, הגזרות נגד המילה ולימוד התורה) ולחסל כל שריד לישות יהודית בארץ ע"י שינוי שמה של הארץ מיודיאה לסוריה־פלשתינה. המיעוט היהודי הלך והצטמק בשנות הכיבוש הביזאנטי, ערבי, צלבני וממלוכי. היהודים העדיפו הגירה על המרת דת. -- כריכה אחורית
