"העיר היא דמשק, והשנה היא 1840. פגישה לילית סוערת בין הנזיר האיטלקי תומאסו לבין אצלאן פרחי, נער יהודי ממשפחת סוחרים עשירה, מסתיימת במוות לא צפוי ומובילה לעלילה נוראה, שבה מואשמים יהודי העיר ברצח הנזיר על-מנת להשתמש בדמו לאפיית מצות הפסח. בעברית סוחפת, מפליאה בעושרה ובגמישותה, פורש מות הנזיר גירסה בידיונית לפרשה ההיסטורית הידועה בשם "עלילת דמשק". גיבור העלילה הוא הנער אצלאן, המתמודד עם תשוקתו לגברים בחברה מסורתית נוקשה ופטריאכלית, ומסתבך באהבה כפולה לשתי דמויות מסתוריות: למחמוד אלתאלי, ערבי נוצרי צהוב-שיער וכחול-עיניים החוקר את היעלמות הנזיר, ולאום ג'יהאן, זמרת יפהפייה שמופיעה בבית-קפה המציע תענוגות מכל סוג ולכל דורש, ומשמש מקום מפגש מרכזי לבלייני דמשק באמצע המאה ה-19. דמשק של מות הנזיר היא עיר צבעונית, תוססת וחושנית, אך גם אפלה מאוד, רוחשת פחד, זדון ואיבה. בין סימטאותיה ושווקיה פורש אלון חילו חיזיון היסטורי וספרותי מפתיע ורב-עוצמה, שראשיתו בקונפליקט רגשי ומיני וסופו עלילת דם." -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
