"איננו סיפור על איך להיות אבא, אלא סיפורו של אבא. ראשיתו של הרומן בחברות אמיצה הנרקמת בסוף מלחמת העולם השנייה במחנה ההשמדה זקסנהאוזן וסיומו בימינו אנו בבסיס חיל האוויר. זהו סיפור שבו שזורים יחדיו מציאות אוטוביוגרפית ודמיון. זהו סיפורם של גיבורים בשר ודם הנאחזים בחיים בכוח; חלקם חיו בינינו ואינם עוד, והספר הוא גלעֵד לזכרם. האחרים הם גיבורים בדיוניים יוצאי דופן. לפנינו רומן מקורי, חוצה תקופות וארצות, המורכב מעלילות משנה שבהן מפגיש המחבר בין דמויות מפתיעות המתמודדות עם מכות גורל. המפגש ביניהן מוליד ארגון שתכליתו לתקן את עוולות העולם בדרכים שאינן שגרתיות. חלק מגיבורי אתה לא יודע להיות אבא ינקמו על חוסר הצדק בחייהם, ואחרים יבחרו בערבות הדדית ובמחילה. מתוך כאבו האישי מעלה המחבר ברומן דרכי התמודדות בלתי שגרתיות עם השכול ועם השאלה המטרידה: מדוע בחר אלוהים לקחת ממנו את התמונה היפה שהייתה מנת חלקו - אבא, אימא, ילד, ילדה וכלב"--מן המעטפת האחורית.
