"שנות השישים בקאבול, בירת אפנגניסטן. שני ילדים, אמיר וחסן נולדים באותו בית מידות ויונקים משדיה של אותה מינקת, אך למרות זאת, הם גדלים בעולמות שונים לחלוטין. אמיר בנו של איש עסקים עשיר ומכובד, מעמודי התווך של קאבול; חסן הוא בנו של עלי, המשרת של באבא, אביו של אמיר. אמיר הוא פאשטוני, מוסלמי סוני, בן לאליטה השלטת. חסן הוא האזארי, בן למיעוט אתני נחשל ומנודה. לשני הילדים האלה - קאבול שלפני הפלישה הסובייטית היא עיר קסומה, ססגונית מלאה ריחות אקזוטיים, בזארים שוקקי חיים ותחרויות להפרחת עפיפונים שכל העיר יוצא לקחת בהן חלק. השניים גדלים יחד, ספק חברים, ספק אדון ומשרת, וגורולותיהם נשזרים זה בזה, עד שאחד מהם בוגד בחברו, ואילו האחר, מוכיח כי נאמנותו לרעהו חשובה לו יותר מחייו. כאשר הסובייטים פולשים לאפגניסטן ואמיר ואביו בורחים מארצם כדי למצוא לעצמם עתיד בקליפורנייה, אמיר חושב שהוא נמלט מעברו, אולם הוא לא מצליח להשאיר את זכרו של חסן מאחור" -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
