"אילו סיפורים אנו בוחרים לספר על עצמנו ועל אחרים וכיצד אנו הופכים להיות האנשים שהננו? תעלול נבזי של קבוצת ילדים בבית־ספר יהודי בברזיל במהלך חגיגת יום־הולדת מסתיים בפציעתו של ז´ואאו, תלמיד ממוצא לא יהודי, שאביו קשה־היום מחליט לציין את יום־הולדתו ה-13 כמו שחוגגים בר מצווה לשאר ילדי השכבה. שנים רבות אחר כך, המסַפּר חי מחדש את האירוע מתוך ניסיון להשכין סדר במחשבותיו ולהתמודד עם הצללים בעברו. בעודו פורט את הנסיבות שקדמו לאותה חגיגה אומללה ואת תוצאותיה המכוננות לגביו, הולכים ונשזרים לתוך "יומן הנפילה" שהוא מנהל סיפוריהם של אביו וסבו. חשבון הנפש הנוקב שלו הופך אט אט לסיפור על שלושה דורות: גבר שמבקש להתמודד עם הטעויות שעשה ונאבק למחול לעצמו; אב חולה אלצהיימר המתעד כל זיכרון כמו מתוך אובססיה; וסב ניצול אושוויץ, שממלא מחברות על גבי מחברות במילון מונחים תמוה וזיכרונות מסולפים של אדם שכל מבוקשו הוא בעצם רק לשכוח ... " -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
