Bookהסיפור מתרחש בשנת 1944, כאשר ברקע מתקיים המאבק של אנשי היישוב בערבים מצד אחד ובבריטים מצד שני, לפני קום המדינה. הספר מתאר את חייו של אורי, הפלמחניק, ואת אהבתו הגדולה למיקה, נערה עולה, עד למותו הטראגי בשדה הקרב. אורי הוא צבר יליד הארץ, קיבוצניק, הילד הראשון של קיבוץ "גת העמקים", בן 19. אורי הוא בעל ביטחון עצמי, וחש מחויבות עמוקה לארצו, למשפחתו, לחבריו ולמשימות הצבאיות שהוטלו עליו. בניגוד לאורי, יליד הארץ, שבא "מכאן", מיקה, בת זוגו, היא עולה חדשה מפולין, פליטה חסרת כל, באה "משם" (השואה אינה נזכרת בספר במפורש, מסיבות שיתוארו בהמשך), שהגיעה על מנת להיקלט בקיבוץ. הרומן מגולל את סיפור אהבתם של השניים, כאשר ברקע סיפורו של הקיבוץ.
