Enlarge text Shrink text

After a survey of the image of the Jews throughout Russian history, proceeds to study works by five authors of post-Soviet detective fiction: Alexandra Marinina, P. Dashkova, Friedrich Neznanski, Changiz Abdulaev, and Boris Akunin. Notes that Jews do not appear as heroes who solve crimes. States that none of these authors supports antisemitism and some even condemn it. However, Jewish stereotypes, such as greedy moneymakers, are common in their works. Sometimes Jews are shown as having been victimized by antisemitism, but also as overreacting. In all cases, Israel is presented more positively than in the anti-Zionist Soviet era. Overall, Jewish images are mixed, combining positive and negative features, with the ratios varying in different works.
