שנאת עולם לעם עולם

A revised edition of the book written by Sokolow in Warsaw in 1882, which reviews Jewish history, focusing on Eastern Europe. Discusses religious antisemitism from the medieval period; anti-Jewish legislation in various countries, often carried out for economic reasons; and intolerance in Russia and Poland, partly due to strong feelings of nationalism. Jews first settled in Poland sometime in the 8th-9th centuries. They began to suffer from antisemitism soon after, mainly because they were forced to engage in usury to make a living. Later they also became tradesmen, but Polish tradesmen feared competition and Jewish activities were restricted through legislation. Compares the situation of Polish Jews to that of Russian Jews, who could only live in certain areas, but had equal rights. Cites nationalism, especially among Slavs and Germans, as the main cause of antisemitism in the 19th century.
