"גילוי כתב היד סוויטה צרפתית והוצאתו לאור היו האירוע הספרותי החשוב בצרפת בשנת 2004. הקהילה הספרותית בצרפת ובאירופה כולה גמרה את ההלל על יצירית המופת יוצאת דופן הזאת, שהתגלתה יותר משישים שנה לאחר שנכתבה. חלקו הראשון של הספר "סערה ביוני" הוא פסיפס רב עוצמה של אנשים ואירועים המתרחשים על רקע הבריחה ההמונית מפריז ביוני 1940, ערב פלישת הנאצים לעיר. משפחות ויחידים, בורגנים ופשוטי עם, ילדים רעבים ויצאניות צמרת נטושות, ללא שום מכנה משותף למעט יצר ההישרדות, שוטפים את הכפרים ונאלצים להסתגל לנסיבות שאין להם שליטה עליהן. טבע האדם נחשף כאן במלוא עליבותו ושפלותו, אך גם ברגעי חסד של נדיבות וגבורה. חלקו השני של הספר "דולצ´ה", מתרחש בכפר צרפתי שנכבש בידי הגרמנים. פרשת אהבים עדינה וסודית נרקמת בין קצין גרמני וצעירה מקומית, שבביתה הוא מתגורר. מערכת יחסים המסוכנת מעלה אל פני השטח רגשות עזים של קנאה והשפלה בקרב אנשי הכפר, הנאלצים לשתף פעולה עם הכובש הזר ..." -- מן המעטפת האחורית.
