"ספר זה בודק את עיצוב העיר המודרנית בשירתם של שניים מענקי השירה האירופית והעברית - שארל בודלר ונתן אלתרמן. פריס שירתה את מטרותיו הפואטיות של בודלר, ושימשה כחומר ביד היוצר. משום כך נוכחותה המסיבית בשירים מטעה. זוהי 'נוכחות נעדרת'; פריס של 'פרחי הרע' אינה נמצאת בשום מקום זולת השירים. זוהי מטאפורה לכרך המודרני בכל זמן ובכל מקום. הכרך המודרני, המופיע ב'פרחי הרע', הנו רדוקציה של המיתוס האורבני העתיק. מנגד, שימשה תל אביב לאלתרמן מרכז רוחני ותרבותי לעם היהודי לעולם כולו; זו הייתה העיר העברית הראשונה, שלא כמו פריס, קמה מתוך 'האין', על חולות הים. עיר חסרת היסטוריה ש'מבלי שאול [...] היא פרצה אל דברי הימים'. הספר מראה כי 'כוכבים בחוץ' היה ניסיונו הראשון של אלתרמן לספק מיתוס לאתוס הלאומי. תל אביב הייתה לאלתרמן בבואה למהפכה הציונית וליישוב העברי בארץ ישראל... ". -- מעטפת אחורית.
