בשלהי שנות הרודנות הפאשיסטית בספרד נמשך סטודנט הלומד במדריד להתחקות בעיר אחרת, עיר הולדתו, אחר סיפור חייו הטרגי והמסתורי של משורר שכוח, מתומכי הרפובליקה המובסת, ששנים רבות קודם לכן נרדף, וככל הידוע הומת בידי חייליו של פרנקו. בתוך כך נקלע הצעיר למרדף אחר אמת חמקמקה במבוכיהם הנפתלים של בית הרה-גורל והנפשות הפועלות הגרות בו, ושל הטראומה הגדולה של מלחמת האזרחים. הוא נלכד לאין מוצא בהם ובמבוכי עברו ונפשו ותשוקותיו שלו עצמו, בקסמה של אהבה אירוטית, חומקנית אף היא. ביכולת סיפורית וירטואוזית, שפיוט ומתח חוברים בה למזיגה מפתיעה, נשזרים כאן סיפוריהן האישיים של דמויות מרתקות של גברים ונשים, על שאיפותיהם ויצריהם, אהבותיהם ושנאותיהם, עם סיפורה האנושי והפוליטי העגום של תקופה אפלה. יצירה מבריקה ורבת-פנים של אחד הסופרים החשובים והבולטים בספרד כיום, מחברם של הרומנים "החורף בליסבון" ו"ירח מלא".
