Contends that the liberals in the Austrian Empire of this period created a powerful new politics organized around nationalist identity in order to repulse the growing threats to their local hegemony - threats that were increasingly couched in nation-based, or race-based (antisemitic) discourse. Ch. 8 (pp. 223-265), "National Unity, Anti-Semitism, and Social Fragmentation, 1885-1914", shows how the idea of German racial superiority and exclusive German nationalism came to replace the old idea of cultural superiority with its inclusive nationalism. Increasingly, the German nationalist movement in Austria became anti-Jewish in this period. It closed its membership to Jews even in the Slavic areas (e.g. the Czech Lands), where the German minority felt itself threatened. Leaders of German nationalist parties and organizations surrendered to radical and "populist" antisemitic factions within their groups in order to preserve "national unity". With all that, even radical German nationalism in Austria preserved some legacies of liberalism, albeit in a perverse form.
