Chs. 1 and 14-15 focus on David Duke, an antisemitic and anti-Black racist and Holocaust minimizer, while the major part of the book presents the Holocaust experiences of the Skorecki family. The connection between the Holocaust and the failure of the neo-Nazi Duke to be elected governor of Louisiana was the involvement of Anne Skorecki Levy, a child survivor, in speaking out against Duke in New Orleans. During the Holocaust, the Skoreckis escaped from the Lodz ghetto but were caught in the Warsaw ghetto, where Mark Skorecki hid his two daughters, Anne and Lila, at the factory where he worked. The family then escaped from the ghetto and posed as Aryans. They were saved by Poles twice: by a mother and daughter named Piotrowska in the Warsaw suburb of Praga, then by Mark's antisemitic employer at a lumberyard. After the war they left antisemitic Poland, living as DPs in Germany until they could emigrate to the U.S. (From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism - The Hebrew University of Jerusalem)
