Studies the attitudes of youth movements in the Land of Israel toward diaspora Jewry from 1939-48. Before and during World War II, many of the youth movements saw the "difference" of Jewish traditional life in the diaspora as being the main cause of antisemitism and pogroms. Hashomer Hatzair and Mahanot Ha'olim (which later became Hatnu'ah Hame'uhedet) stressed Marxism and negated Jewish tradition and the diaspora. European Jewry was ignored by these movements until the 1943 Warsaw ghetto uprising, after which only Jewish resistance became a topic of discussion. Members of Beitar were at first more concerned about the fate of Eastern European Jewry, but their later equation of the passive Yishuv leadership with diaspora Jewry led to negation of the diaspora. Bnei Akiva, a religious movement, responded by dealing more with religious issues - with theological questions raised by the Holocaust and the aspect of "Kiddush Hashem" in the death of Eastern European Jews. States that, for most of the movements, the negation of diaspora Jewry weakened their ability to identify with victims of the Holocaust.
