ר' מנחם רקנאטי, שפעל באיטליה בשלהי המאה הי"ג ובראשית המאה הי"ד, היה מחשובי המקובלים של ראשית הקבלה. למרות בקיאותו הרבה, גישתו העקרונית לתפיסת מערכת האלוהות והשפעתו על מקובלים רבים, נותרו כתביו והשקפותיו בשולי המחקר. מונוגרפיה זו היא הסקירה הנרחבת הראשונה אודותיו, והיא מטפלת במכלול הנושאים הקבליים שהעסיקו את רקאנטי על רקע התפתחות הקבלה במאה השנים שלפניו. המחקר, המבוסס על מאות כתבי יד וסוקר את התפתחותם של הרעיונות שעיצבו את הגותו הקבלית, דן גם בהשפעת כתביו של רקנאטי על הקבלה באיטליה ובצפת, ובתרומתם להופעת הקבלה הנוצרית. נדונה גם הזיקה האפשרית בין תפסיתו של רקנאטי את התורה לבין הדקונסטרוקציה של דרידה. ספר זה מכיל את חלקה הראשון של המונוגרפיה. חלקה השני יראה אור בקרוב. ר' מנחם רקנאטי המקובל הוא הרביעי בסדרת ספרי קבלה שמפרסם משה אידל בהוצאת שוקן. קדמו לו גולם, אברהם אבולעפיה: לשון, תורה והרמוניטיקה וקבלה: היבטים חדשים, שזיכה את מחברו בפרס ביאליק. משה אידל הוא פרופסור בקתדרה להגות יהודית על שם מקס קופר, האוניברסיטה העברית, ירושלים.
