The Jews as "others"

Enlarge text Shrink text

Based on 80 interviews, describes the present grassroots image of Jews, the perception of Jewish "otherness" by the average Austrian, and the spread of old and new antisemitic stereotypes. The findings point to the conclusion that the image of Jews held by older Austrians has been passed on to the younger generation. The contemporary image contains a marked religious component, but without reference to deicide or ritual murder accusations. Although there were no specific questions in the interviews concerning the Holocaust, the topic arose spontaneously, revealing a common tendency to deny responsibility and to accuse Jews of being unwilling to let go of the past.
