African Americans and Jewish Americans

Surveys Black-Jewish relations in the USA against the background of African American and Jewish American history. During the 1930s Blacks and Jews often worked together for advancement, since both groups suffered from discrimination; however, Jewish businessmen were also criticized for taking advantage of Blacks. Discusses racism and antisemitism in the U.S. during World War II, including in the military, and the Black-Jewish alliance in the civil rights struggle of the 1950s-60s. States that Black antisemitism has always existed, especially among Black nationalists. There has been a trend of worsening Black-Jewish relations, dating from the New York City school decentralization conflict of the mid-1960s. The alliance between African and Jewish Americans has become unraveled, with bleak prospects for good relations between the two groups.
