"ספר זה הוא נסיון לעקוב אחר הסיפורת העברית במאה השנים האחרונות (1880-1980). המחבר מתאר הן את הרצף והן את התמורות הפנימיות שחלו בה מדור לדור ומקבוצה לקבוצה, וחושף את הגורמים החיצוניים, החברתיים והתרבותיים, שהטביעו את חותמם על נושאיה, תבניותיה, דמויותיה וסגנונה. ההתבוננות היא כפולה - בת זמנה ובת זמננו. המרחק והזמן נתנו בידי החוקר כלי-הבחנה שאיפשרו לו לעמוד על ערכן של היצירות במפה הכללית של הספרות העברית, ערך שלעיתים הוא שונה מזה שניתן להן בזמנן ובמקומן - לאמור: דרך הפירוש אינה חופפת בהכרח את דרך הפירוש של ימים עברו. לא זו בלבד ש"קהלים" שונים קולטים אותה יצירה בצורות שונות, אלא דומה שהקליטה המאוחרת משוחררת הרבה יותר משיקולים חוץ-אסטתיים בני זמנם, שלגביהם היוו היצירות השונות מעין "מסר" חברתי. לפנינו נסיון מעמיק ומקיף להתחקות אחר התפתחותה של סיפורת הירואית"--מן המעטפת האחורית.
