ספר זה, שהוא מלאכת-אמנות בכתיבה היסטורית, פותח לפנינו פתח להבנת בעיות המזרח התיכון המודרני, ומנתח את השפעת הציביליזציה המערבית של עמי האיסלאם. בשני הפרקים הראשונים מגדיר המחבר את המזרח-התיכון כישות היסטורית, גיאוגרפית ותרבותית, ועוקב אחר תהליכי חדירתו של המערב לתוכו, השתלטותו – ונסיגתו. בהמשך הוא סוקר תנועות פוליטיות ואינטלקטואליות במזרח-התיכון בעבר ובהווה, וכן את תפקידו של ארצות המזרח-התיכון במדיניות הבין-לאומית. בסיומו נבחנים אחדים מן הגורמים הממשיכים להשפיע על מדיניות המערב במזרח התיכון. במהדורה העברית נוספו לספר, שני מאמרים משלימים, שנכתבו ע"י המחבר לאחר מלחמת ששת הימים, הסוקרים את התהליכים המדיניים באיזור בתקופת המלחמה ולאחריה. כן מקדים את המהדורה העברית מבוא מיוחד שנכתב ע”י המחבר לתרגום העברי. הספר זכה לבקורות נלהבות בעתונות ובכתבי-העת המדעיים, והוא בבחינת ספר-חובה למבקש להבין את התהליכים המדיניים במזרח-התיכון.
