רומן אהבה והרפתקאות זה, על תלמיד חכם יהודי הנשבה בימי גזירות ת"ח ונמכר לעבד לאיכר פולני, מצוין בסגולות - הסיפור ובקסם הפולקלור שהקנו למספר האידי יצחק בשביס - זינגר שם בין - לאומי. פרשת האהבה האסורה, המלווה נפתולי - נפש, שבין העבד היהודי ובין בת אדוניו הנוצריה, משולבת בתיאורי ההוי הססגוני של היהודים והפולנים במאה הי"ז. יצחק בשביס - זינגר נולד בפולין בשנת 1904. משנת 1935 הוא יושב בארצות - הברית, משתתף בקביעות בעתונות האידית והאגגלית ונחשב כגדול סופרי א"י דיש החיים כיום. רוב ספריו הופיעו בתרגום אנגלי ורבים מהם תורגמו לעברית : "משפחת מושקט" (הוצאת עם עובד), "השטן מגוריי" (הוצאת דביר), "האחוזה" ו"עושה הנפלאות מלובלין" (ספרית פועלים) ועוד. ב1965 - נבחר למכון הלאומי לאמנות ולספרות בארצות - הברית ובשנת 1978 זכה בפרס נובל, לספרות. יצחק בשביס - זינגר הוא אחיו של הסופר, האידי הנודע י.י.זינגר.
