Authorization to Copy or Publish Manuscript

Requesting authorization

In general, the National Library and its users are not authorized to copy and publish manuscripts which were photocopied from various sources without written permission from the source libraries.

List of libraries whose manuscripts may be scanned without asking permission.

To ask for permission, please send the appropriate application form from the list below to the source library by e-mail:

Request permission to photocopy from the Sassoon Library, Bayit Vagan

Request permission to photocopy from the Lehman Collection, New York

Other Libraries

Once the permission is received please forward it to: mss.rep@nli.org.il​

The manuscript can only be scanned after we receive the permission.

Scanning by Self Service and Ordering Scans

1. If you wish to scan the manuscript in the self-service photocopy desk in the Special Collections Reading Room or purchase a scanned copy it is necessary to check the source of the manuscript.

3. If the source is one of the following:

  • Jerusalem, The National Library of Israel
  • Oxford, Bodleian Library
  • London, The British Library
  • Saint Petersburg, Institute of Oriental Manuscripts, the Russian Academy of Sciences
  • Cambridge, University Library

4. If the manuscript is from another source, please send to the source library an application form for permission to scan, and forward the approval to the National Library of Israel to the e-mail address: mss.rep@nli.org.il.

5. The manuscript can only be scanned after we receive the approval from you. You may scan by means of self-service, or order the scan here.

Source Libraries

​Scanning microfilms of manuscripts from the following sources is permitted without asking permission from the source collection, under the following conditions:

​Source ​Conditions for Scanning
Jerusalem, The National Library of Israel Scanning for the purposes of "Fair Use" is allowed. If the manuscript is in the Public Domain any use is allowed.
​Oxford, Bodleian Library ​Up to 10% of the manuscript, for any purpose.
​London, The British Library Scanning for any purpose is permitted if the manuscript is scanned on the “Ktiv” website. Crediting the British Library is mandatory. For scanning manuscripts which are not scanned on Ktiv, an application must be sent to the British Library to receive permission.
Saint Petersburg, Institute of Oriental Manuscripts, the Russian Academy of Sciences or research purposes only. Contact the source library for publication authorization
Cambridge, University Library For research purposes only. Contact the source library for publication authorization

Manuscripts from the above sources can be scanned by self-service, or the scanning can be ordered through the National Library’s Document Delivery service.
