Zecharia Yichya Hashav

Enlarge text Shrink text

Zecharia Yichya Hashav, son of Avraham, was born in 1874 (It is not clear if he was born in Israel). He grew up in the Old City of Jerusalem. (His family's original name was Shahav). When the 'Succat Shalom' neighborhood was built in Jerusalem (1988) the family moved into a large house there and rented rooms out to people. One of the people who rented a room was Yitzhak Ben-Zvi (the second President of the State of Israel) from "Poalei Zion", Yaakov Zerubabvel and Yosef Boloton. (See photo YBZ.0294.005). Zecharia Yechya was the Yemenite Mukhtar of the neighborhood. He helped people with problems and requests from the Ottoman Empire. One example from this collection is a request to look for a woman who ran away from her husband. (See photo YBZ.0294.001). Zecharia Yichya Hashav was a trader. In 1926 he married Luna who was also of Yemenite descent, from Kfar Hashiloach on the hills of the Mount of Olives. After his marriage he built a house in Tel-Aviv near the Careml Shuk. He used to transfer building materials on a horse drawn wagon. As a trader, he travelled to Egypt a number of times, to trade tobacco and cigarettes. He also bought rice in Japan and sold it in Israel. The documents were brought to the Yad Ben-Zvi Archives by Eliav and Bat-Shave (Sabina) Shevah.
