Shmuel Banai

Shmuel Banai was born in 1915 in Jerusalem. He was the eldest son of Malca-Behora Shabtai Banai (1894 approx.) and Meir- Eilyahu Banai (1896 approx.); brother to Yaakov (1919-1996), Aliza Ajiof (1921-1997), Avraham (1927-1987 YBZ.0603), Itzhak (1930), Yossi (1932-2006), Haim (1937-2008) and Gavri (1939). Shmuel's grandfather's father, Yaakov Bana (the name was later changed to Banai) and his wife Rachel moved to Israel in 1881 and settled in Jerusalem. Their son Yaakov—Eliyahu Banai and his wife Hana-Sarah nee Mizrachi lived on what is today Nissim Behar Street. Their son Meir—Eliyah and his children (including Shmuel Banai) moved to #1 Agas Street in the Mahane Yehuda Market in 1933, above the store that still bears his name. In his youth Shmuel Banai was a member of the Persian Youth Club. They took trips around the country, some guided by Ze'ev Vilnai (see YBZ.0054). In 1938 he married Kohava Freji (1921), born in Saloniki, the daughter of Mordechai and Simha Freji, born in Monastir (today Bitola) Macedonia. They later moved to # 46 David Yellin Street in Jerusalem. The couple had three children: Yardena (Sasson, 1941), Sarah (Guy, 1944) and Eli (1947). Shmuel worked as a printer in Azreil Print in Jerusalem where the newspapers; 'Al Hamishmar', 'Haboker' (The Morning) and 'Heid Hamizrach' (The Eastern Echo) were published. In addition the official newspaper of the British mandate in Palestine was published there. They also published the research journals, 'Tarbitz', 'Zion' and 'Kiryat Sefer'. He volunteered in 'Plugat Hapoel' in Jerusalem and was an usher in the plays that were performed at the Edison Theater and at the YMCA in Jerusalem. On October 28, 1953 Shmuel passed away on the operating table. He was buried on Har Hamenuhot in Givat Shaul. His father, Meir-Eilyah, passed away a few years after him (1960) and is buried near him. This photo collection was brought to the archives buy his daughter, Sarah Banai Guy.
