Description
The series includes manuscripts, personal documents and correspondence from Gerschon Ben-David's estate, as well as documents related to his commemoration. The poet Gerschon Ben-David (Georg Levkovitz, 1930-1975) was born to a Jewish-Polish mother and grew up in Cologne, in the home of a non-Jewish family. Although this allowed him to escape the fate of most European Jews during WWII, as the war ended he joined the survivors in the DP camps and in 1947 immigrated illegally to Palestine. He spent most of his adult life in Israel, and wrote and published his poetry in German. His first book of poetry (In den Wind werfen. Versuche um Metabarbarisches) was published posthumously in a bilingual (German and Hebrew) edition. The book was edited by his close friend Otto Dov Kulka, who also kept his literary estate and donated it to the NLI as part of his own estate.
