The collection contains autograph letters from important scientists and documents related to alchemy, chemistry, dyeing and textile printing, as well as copperplates, steel engravings, photographs, and medals showing the portraits of the scientists. Most of the manuscripts collected by Edelstein in these fields are kept in the manuscript collection.

Sidney M. Edelstein (1912-1994) was a chemist and historian of sciences. He was active in the field of dyeing and textile painting and over the years he built a large collection of letters, documents and manuscripts on the history of sciences, in particular of chemistry, alchemy and dyeing. |
Ownership history |
In 1976, Sidney M. Edelstein presented his large collection of books and documents to the Jewish National and University library. This collection was the core of the special collection on the history of sciences and medicine named after him. In 2016, the documents, letters, portraits and medals were transferred to the Archives Department of the National Library and for the first time they were included in the general catalog of the library. Until then, the printed catalog by Moshe Ron, produced in 1981, was the only finding aid. |
