Biographical summary |
Waldemar Mordecai Wolff Haffkine was born and educated in Odessa. He studied under the Nobel prize winner Elie Mechnikoff and received a doctorate in natural sciences in 1884. In 1890 he became assistant to the director of the Pasteur Institute in Paris and began working on his cholera vaccine. He discovered the cholera vaccine in 1892 and the bubonic plague vaccine in 1896. From 1893 onwards he spent most of his time in India establishing laboratories and leading mass vaccinaton campaigns. In 1915 he moved to Paris and became active in Jewish affairs, including rights of Jews in Eastern Europe. A foundation to aid yeshivot was established in Lausanne in 1930 with money he had bequeathed. He died in October 1930, unmarried and without children. In 1925 the Plague Research Institute of Bombay was renamed the Haffkine Institute after its founder. |
Ownership history |
The archive was bequeathed by Haffkine before his death and arrived on Mount Scopus in 1933. It was brought to Givat Ram in 1964/5. |
