Title USA '94 - "THE WORLD'S BEST SOCCER PLAYER" PREPARES IN ISRAEL Diego Maradona - for many years dubbed "the world's best soccer player” - along with his Argentinian teammates, prepared for their World Cup bid this summer in the USA just as they have prepared for their last two World Cup outings - in Israel.
Scope and content Due to play lsrael's national side in a "friendly" match on the evening of 31 Nay 1994, the Argentinians on 30 May met with Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in Jerusalem and then paid a short visit to the Western Wall. After his meeting with Rabin - Maradona said that he had been more excited than when he met Fidel Castro (sic). Calling Rabin "one of the most important personalities in the world" the diminutive striker said "For him to give us a little of his time, for me, it is great". At the Wall, Maradona said a short prayer and placed a written message between the blocks of the Wall. He also found time to pose for photographers with too smiling female soldiers and to record a "Boker Tov Yisrael" (“Good-morning Israel") message for Army Radio's morning news. Matadona is not only renowned for his undoubtedly superb soccer skills but also for his "bad boy" antics off the pitch. Indeed the soccer world was rocked a few years ago when Maradona was found guilty of using cocaine and it looked as though he might never play again in the professional arena. But in the end an Argentinian side in the World Cup - without Maradona - was it seems too hard to contemplate. In 1978 Argentina won the coveted World Cup on their won turf, they won again in 1986 in Mexico and in 1990 in Italy they finished runners up to Germany. This year they start as one of the top favorites to win the top for the third time. World Cup 94 - hosted by the USA - will start 16 June 1994. Photo shows Diego Maradona, the Argentinian international soccer star dubbed "the world's best player" meeting lsrael Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in Jerusalem, 30 Nay 1994. Maradona is handing Rabin an Argentine Football Association penant. The Argentinian national squad were due to play a "friendly" match against Israel's national side.
