Rabbi Lau, 56, was the former Chief Rabbi of Tel-Aviv. He came to Israel from Poland at the age of eight and was a concentration camp survivor. He studied at the Kol Torah and Ponevezh yeshivot and has always combined a high level of scholarship without at any time loosing his touch with the man in the street. There is no question that Rabbi Lau without compromising his status as chief rabbi will be a very important bridge between the relgious and secular communities. He has always been a strong advocate of Jewish education and values, feeling that with these values Israel will be a stronger place both morally and spiritually. Although the Chief Rabbinate in Israel has no halachic power over Jewish communities in the diaspora, the orthodox communities abroad do look towards the rabbinate for spiritual guidance on matters that concern fundamental problems affecting Jews generally. Photo shows: Rabbi Israel Lau discussing today his objectives when he takes up his position as Israel's next Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi.
