Title Twenty-eight Russian couples were married in a special ceremony organized by the Habad movement in Kyriat Malachi this evening, The new immigrants, the oldest of whom was sixty, had previously been married in civil ceremonies in Russia before coming on aliyah.
Scope and content They had wanted to be 'remarried' according to Jewish tradition under a chuppah (canopy). The money for the ceremony was donated by Paul Sirotkin from the US The 'mass marriages' are all part of the town's aim to encourage the new olim, who up to now have not been able to be involved in Jewish tradition in Russia, to feel part of the town immigrant absorption activities. Photo shows: the brides seated at the wedding table following the marriage ceremony. Each couple were given a number that corresponded to their place at the table as well as the number of the Huppah (Blessing).
