Biographical summary בבתי ישראל נהגו לתלות על קיר המזרח לוח ממוסגר עשוי רקמה או ציור צבעוני שעליו התנוססה המילה "מזרח", כדי לציין את המקום שאליו צריך לפנות בזמן התפילה. בשם "מזרח" נקראות גם התמונות המקשטות את סוכותיהם של ישראל בחג הסוכות. אילו מעוצבות בדרך כלל בשער מפואר משובץ בציורי המקומות הקדושים, או דמויות מן המקרא. בראש השער מתנוססת המילה "מזרח".
