Shmuel Werses (1915-2010) was a literary scholar, a professor in the Hebrew university of Jerusalem and winner of the Israel Prize from 1989. Lectured at the teachers' seminar in the refugee camps in Cyprus before Israel's independence and taught new Aliyah members Hebrew literature afterwards. Researched the history of Hebrew manuscripts and modern Hebrew literature. His archive includes personal documents, journals and notebooks, correspondences, materials for his articles, research and classes as well as his students' works and assignments. Materials by and about his Wife, Esther Caspi, was also added.

Biographical summary שמואל ורסס חוקר ספרות, פרופסור לספרות עברית באוניברסיטה העברית וחתן פרס ישראל לשנת תשמ"ט. נולד בווילנה 1915. לאחר שסיים את לימודיו בגימנסיה "תרבות" החל ללמוד באוניברסיטת וילנה, וב-1935 עלה לארץ ישראל והמשיך ללמוד בחוג לספרות עברית שבאוניברסיטה העברית עד לקבלת הדוקטורט. לפני קום המדינה הרצה בסמינר למורים שבמחנות פליטים בקפריסין ובפני מדריכי תנועת נוער מבוגרים. לאחר קום המדינה לימד חיילים עולים חדשים ספרות עברית. החל מ-1953 נמנה עם סגל החוג לספרות עברית באוניברסיטה העברית. שמואל ורסס הוא מגדולי חוקרי ספרות ההשכלה. הוא חקר אף את תולדות כתבי העת העבריים ושלח ידו גם בחקר הספרות העברית החדשה. נפטר בירושלים אוקטובר 2010.
