Eliahu Epstein-Elath (1903-1990) is an orientalist, a Zionist activist and an Israeli diplomat. He was involved in Zionist activities in Russia and the USSR before his Aliyah in 1924, worked in the Jewish Agency as the manager of the agency's wing for the neighboring countries, was the first Israeli ambassador to the United States, the Israeli ambassador to the United Kingdom between 1950 to 1959 and president of the Hebrew University between 1962 to 1968. His archive includes research materials and documents about his activity in the Hebrew University. The rest of the archive is in the Central Zionist Archives.

Biographical summary אליהו אילת נולד בשם אליהו אפשטיין בסנובסק שבאוקראינה של היום ב-1903. בזמן המהפכה הרוסית הצטרף לתנועת הנוער "צעירי ציון" והמשיך לפעול בסתר עם ארגוני התנועה הציונית בברית המועצות עד עלייתו ארצה ב-1924. למד באוניברסיטה העברית במכון ללימודי המזרח ולאחר מכן באוניברסיטה האמריקאית בביירות. ב-1934 החל לעבוד במחלקה המדינית של הסוכנות היהודית, כמנהל האגף לארצות השכנות וב-1945 קיבל את תפקיד נציג הסוכנות היהודית בוושינגטון, אשר הומר לתפקיד שגריר ישראל הראשון בארצות הברית עם קום המדינה. בשנים 1950-1959 כיהן כשגריר ישראל בבריטניה ובשנים 1962-1968 כיהן כנשיא האוניברסיטה העברית, בה השלים את הדוקטורט שלו רק בשנתו האחרונה בתפקיד. היה מחבר פורה של ספרות מחקרית ועיונית על הבדואים וערביי ארץ ישראל, דיפלומטיה ועוד. נפטר בירושלים ב-1990.
