Biographical summary הרב פרופסור שמחה אסף (1889-1953) רב והיסטוריון ישראלי. היה רקטור האוניברסיטה העברית (בשנים 1948-1950) ושופט בית המשפט העליון (משנת 1949). נולד כשמחה אוסובסקי בלובן, רוסיה, למד בישיבות סלוצק וטלז. חיבר מחקרים רבים במדעי היהדות, ובכלל זה על תקופת הגאונים, על הספרות הרבנית ועל המשפט העברי.
