رقم النظام On Friday 1 July 1994, PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat arrived in the Gaza Strip for his long-awaited visit - set to include a day-trip to Jericho. Arafat's initial entry into the Strip was quieter than expected. He sped past the notables and Palestinian police honour-guard which had assembled to meet him at Rafiah, and instead went on to Gaza City, waving now and again from the sunroof of his Mercedes. At the main square in Gaza City an estimated 80,000 crowd chanted with Arafat and the PLO's Chief negotiator Nabil Sha'ath: "In blood and spirit we will Liberate Palestine". In his speach Arafat told the gathering that in fact the Gaza/Jericho Agreement was "The best we can get in the worst situation". He specifically included a promise to the Palestinian prisoners that have not yet been released that they will not be forgotten: "Above all, to Sheikh Ahmed Yassin. My brother, we are with you...we refuse to compromise on any prisoner. It is a basic issue". Neither did Arafat forget the issue of Jerusalem: "The Israelis must recognize our holy sites in Jerusalem...The peace of the brave requires still more courage from everyone". On his first day in the area of the Palestinian Authority Arafat met personally with a group of Palestinians disabled in the 'intifada' and a group of children recognized for helping in the uprising effort.
