Photograph is printed in a book with a description beneath in French printed description: "Pétra est une ville de grottes et de tombeaux, mais ces tombeaux sont muets les inscriptions nabathéennes, des graphites pour la plupart, n'ont pas donné ce qu'on en attendait. Plusieurs de ces tombeaux rappellent ceux de la vallée de Josaphat et ceux des Juges. Leur position au milieu du désert en rend l'impression grandiose. A les voir si dégradés et solitaires, on se rappelle les prophéties terribles de Jérémie et d'Abdias contre Edom, et l'on se dit qu'elles se sont bien accomplies: 'Quand même tu placerais ton aire aussi haut que l'aigle, je t'en précipiterai quiconque passera prés de toi, frissonnera.'"
