ספר המשלב קטעי יומנים של נערה צעירה שנכתבו בתקופה השואה, בגטו וארשה ובמקומות אחרים, עם גלגוליה המאוחרים ועם זיכרונות שנכתבו ממרחק של זמן. השתייכותה של המחברת לתנועת השומר הצעיר במחתרת בגטו וארשה –ולתקופה קצרה גם לארגון הלוחם- והתמסרותה לרעיון המרד הטביעו חותם על חייה ועל עולמה הרוחני. בעצת מדריכיה מהארגון הלוחם יצאו עליזה ובנות גילה לצד ה'ארי' של וארשה, במטרה להציל את נפשן ולספר את הקורות אותן. ; Memoirs of a Jew born as Liza Melamed in Warsaw in 1928. Relates her experiences in the Holocaust, combining excerpts from a diary written during the war and memoirs written in 1946 and later. Describes life in the Warsaw ghetto, where the family was interned. Vitis-Shomron joined Hashomer Hatzair and then participated in resistance activities of the Jewish Fighting Organization. Describes Nazi roundups and resistance during the roundup of January 1943. Shortly before the uprising Vitis-Shomron, her mother, and her sister escaped to the "Aryan side" and went into hiding; later they hid in various villages. In July 1943 they joined a group of Jews who were meant to be exchanged for Germans in other countries, and were interned at the Bergen-Belsen transit camp. In April 1945 they were sent on a death transport, during which they were liberated; after the war they emigrated to Eretz Israel. Vitis-Shomron's father was killed by the Nazis in November 1943.
