Pt. 2 (pp. 65-189) relates his activities during the Holocaust. With the German occupation of Vilna in June 1941, Kovner, a leader of Hashomer Hatzair, hid in a nearby monastery. After hearing about the massacre of Jews in the Ponary forest, he returned to the ghetto and urged Zionist youth movement leaders to resist. In a speech delivered in January 1942 he insisted that the Jews were doomed and armed resistance was necessary, after which he concentrated on organizing a resistance movement. Discusses conflicts between Judenrat head Jacob Gens and the resistance, including the surrender of resistance leader Yitzhak Wittenberg to the Nazis under pressure from Gens. Kovner then became head of the resistance, but the situation was hopeless. When the ghetto was liquidated in September 1943, he fled to the forest with other resistance fighters and became the leader of a Jewish partisan group within a framework of Soviet partisans.
