A selection of Mann's reflections on the history and culture of the Germans and Jews, excerpted from articles, speeches, and letters, most of them translated for the first time into Russian. Some of the excerpts relate his opinions on Nazism, racism, and antisemitism. The introduction, "Thomas Mann: Lessons on Humanism" (pp. 9-73), analyzes Mann's political ideas and philosophy of culture, and emphasizes his constant opposition to Nazi antisemitism, considered a tool to destroy European civilization. Points out Mann's belief that the attitude toward Jews is an indication of the level and durability of a national culture. Recalls Mann's wartime broadcasts condemning the mass murder of the Jews in the Nazi-occupied territories or praising the heroism of the Warsaw ghetto fighters.
