In 1935 the family moved to Piotrków. Pp. 14-143 deal with the Holocaust period. Describes the German occupation and life in the ghetto. In June 1941, SS officers came to arrest his father, the chief rabbi; not finding him, they arrested Lau-Lavie and sent him to Auschwitz. His parents paid for an escape, and he returned home. In October 1942 Lau-Lavie's father and one of his brothers were deported to Treblinka and murdered. In summer 1943 his mother was deported to Ravensbrück (where she died); Naphtali took his brother Yisrael (then seven years old) with him to several camps, ending up in the HASAG camp in Częstochowa in November 1944. Naphtali kept his brother alive through bribery; when they were sent to Buchenwald in January 1945, he managed to get Yisrael into a special youth block. After the liberation they were transported to Eretz-Israel. Lau-Lavie later became a diplomat and his brother was appointed chief rabbi of Israel in 1993.
