Defending the faith

During the nineteenth century, Christians and Jews spoke with each other about religious matters but not as equals, and often without genuine respect for the other's convictions. Through their writings on Christianity and Jesus, Jews attempted to find a modus vivendi with the larger Christian culture and define their posture within American society either as insiders or outsiders. Part 2 (pp. 79-175) offers source material of Jewish and Christian writings, including "A Missionary Attacks the Jewish Religion" (pp. 81-86) in which Joseph Frey tried to arouse Christian support for missionary work among Jews by showing Jewish spiritual poverty.
