Dr. Dov Bernard Joseph (1899-1980), one of the most renowned Jewish lawyers in Mandatory Palestine, the military governor of Jerusalem during the Israeli War of Independence, a minister in Israel's governments, a Knesset member. He was born in Montreal, Canada. During World War I, he was one of the organizers of the Hebrew Brigades, and went himself to Palestine with the American brigade in 1918. After finishing his Law degree, he made an Aliyah in 1921. during the 20s and 30s, Dov Joseph became one the most prominent lawyers in Palestine. His judicial work includes representing the Arlosoroff family after the assassination of Haim Arlosoroff, and judicial counseling for the Jewish Agency for Israel. During World War II he was responsible for the volunteers for the British army from the Yishuv, and was a member of the Agency's management board from 1945. During the Israeli war of Independence he was the military governor of Jerusalem, and later became the first Minister of Rationing and Supply. Joseph became renowned in this job as one of the people responsible for the austerity policy during Israel's first years. Later he was the minister of agriculture, transportation, justice, trade and industry, development and health. He passed away in January 1980. His personal and official archive is kept at The Israel State Archives. However, The National Library of Israel possesses two parts of his personal estate, which come from different sources: a. In 2010 The library purchased some of Joseph's personal letters and photographs. These are yet to be catalogued and therefore their accessibility is limited. b. In 2017 the library received copies of Joseph's personal diaries, in which he wrote notes and comments from government meetings between the years 1948-1959.
